Greg Lambrecht, the founder and inventor of Coravin, combined his knowledge of medical-grade needles with his passion for wine to develop a unique wine preservation system that allowed him to pour wine without removing the cork. In the late 1990s, he brought his expertise in creating ultra-gentle and exceptionally precise needles for pediatric chemotherapy delivery to his home workshop, where he began working on a device that would change the way he drank wine.

There are currently over 26 million refugees around the world, many of whom are children. At Kids Operating Room, we believe every child should have access to safe surgery, but this isn’t always a possibility when you live in a refugee setting. That's why we are delighted to install the world’s first children’s Operating Room in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya. The children’s Operating Room is expected to care for up to 1,000 children every year led by Kenyan Paediatric surgeon Neema Kaseje. Alongside key partners UNHCR, IRC and the Biltema Foundation, the dedicated OR will also scale the pediatric surgical care in Kakuma through the training of junior doctors.

As the COVID pandemic arose, two brilliant young men from Kakuma Refugee Camp teamed up to distribute over 6,000 face masks to their community for free. Joseph, a student at SNHU, has a natural passion for supporting and empowering people in his community. When the pandemic first broke out, he knew his community would be severely affected, as many families were not able to afford face masks to protect themselves and others. Joseph teamed up with a local fashion designer to create face masks because he knew that if he were to wait for outside help, there was a great possibility that it would never come.

Samson Mulinda wants to use his talent and locally available fabric to contribute to the pandemic. In Kakuma Refugee Camp, displaced artisans are stepping up a gear to supply face masks and protective equipment in desperately short supply. Nearly three weeks after Kenya confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on 13 March, the government issued a directive requiring everyone to wear face masks in public places. Overnight, reusable fabric masks became the country’s most coveted accessory.

From Kakuma to Tokyo, families of the refugee Olympians in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp send prayers and messages of support. The IOC Refugee Olympic Team features athletes who trained for years, having overcome persecution and conflict to compete at the highest level. This is the second time the team will be appearing at the Olympics. The first was in Rio in 2016 where they made history as the first Refugee Olympic Team at the games.
